What does menstrual illiteracy lead to? Trauma and taboo around a normal body function.

A Menstrual Hygiene Literacy Workshop and Pad Donation camp was conducted in the village of Singtor, Tarangapur, Uttar Dinajpur , West Bengal last month by Pinkshe Foundation's facilitator,Binati Singha. Fatema(name changed) , an 11 year old girl, attended this session with her friends. She has yet to experience periods and had no knowledge about it. But she had noticed her amma and elder sister taking cloth shreds from under their mattress sometimes and was always curious about it.

In the session , our facilitator, explained about puberty, menstrual cycle, need for and ways to maintain safe menstrual hygiene, and safe and environment-friendly ways to dispose of menstrual waste.

Fatema saw a sanitary napkin for the first time that day! Eager and curious, she asked us: "Where should I keep the pads? How can I use them ?" Unlike with her family, her questions were answered in detail. She rushed back home after the session to tell her mother and sister about sanitary pads.
