Lata, (name changed) 30-year-old, was hesitant to carry a pack of the pad not wrapped in paper distributed at a Menstrual Hygiene Literacy Workshop in Sri Sarada Math Vivek Library, Dumdum Park.
Mrs. Anindita Choudhury, director of Padbank and branch leader in Kolkata, conducted this camp on the 8th of January. Lata said, "As far as these topics are concerned, there is always a hush-hush in my surroundings."
This incident shows the amount of stigma attached to menstruation. Lata agreed to carry the unwrapped packet after the facilitator convinced her not to shy away.
Many women came from the nearby slums and were unfamiliar with sanitary products apart from pads. The highlight of the session was menstrual hygiene. Topics like: intimate washes, process of menstruation, female body anatomy, and disposal of the products were discussed. Old clothes were distributed among the beneficiaries.
The centre head at Vivek Library extended full support towards the workshop.
